When she was 15, Yensen Nyirenda fell in love with a boy two years her senior. By her 16th birthday, she was getting ready to be married as the relationship had resulted in a pregnancy. Her marriage was hastily arranged after her family found out, and, per local custom, she was expected to go and live with her husband. During the first days of their marriage, everything seemed to be going well. However, within a few months, things took an ugly turn when her husband started physically abusing her.
